Most of the challenges we face today are the result of our colonial status in the United States.

The lack of Statehood:
* Denies us our voice and vote in the body that makes the laws we live under;
* Gives a group of non-resident outsiders a line item veto over our budget;
* Enables the Congress to hold up all our legislation for 30 days & attach unrelated bills and other legislation to passage of the District budget;
* Saddles us with the obligations of a state yet none of the privileges;

WHY STATEHOOD?
* 80% of DC voters voted YES in a 1980 referendum for DC statehood.
* In a 2002 Washington Post poll, 66% of DC residents supported statehood.

WHY NOT STATEHOOD?
* If it’s good enough for the other 300 million+ US citizens becoming the 51st state is good enough for District residents! Besides, we have already paid for & earned it with our blood, sweat, tears & taxes!
* This is the first of a series of Statehood Forums sponsored by the DC Statehood Green Party (DCSGP). Stay tuned for upcoming announcements.
